Second Circular INTERRAD X - 2003

Dear Radiolarian Colleagues,

First we would like to apologize for the long delay of this second circular. INTERRAD X WILL happen as planned! We have received over 70 responses to the first circular, with a reasonable interest in the pre- and post- meeting field trips and a run for the mid-meeting Zermatt field trip! We have received suggestions for theme sessions and informal meetings, some which appear below and may take place depending on the abstract submissions. The 2003 logo is still warm from just being finished.
This second circular is essentially an update of the information and news from the responses collected since the first circular.
The third circular, scheduled for the end of February, will contain the full registration and abstract submission procedure via the WEB-Site or by FAX/Mail. If you did not receive this circular to your e-mail address, please contact us to be added to the INTERRAD 2003 mailing list.

MEETING DATE: Sept. 7 (Sunday travel day) - Sept. 13 (Saturday travel day), 2003

MEETING LOCATION:
University of Lausanne, Switzerland. We have been able to reserve the "Grange" (the barn). The Grange is a big historical farm building amidst large trees and shady lawns on our University Campus, 200 m from the Lake Leman. The Grange is usually hosting University receptions and theatre presentations. There is sufficient room to hang posters all week, to have the plenary sessions, and to have workshops and small meetings in the evening in several rooms, if needed. The grange is only 100 m from the University cafeteria, where we will have lunch and dinner. It is also 100 m from the Institute of Geology and Paleontology. ACCOMMODATION:
Rooms have been reserved at the Jeun�tel, a modern youth hostel located on the shores of the lake. The University Campus can be reached from the hotel either by a short (2 stops) bus ride, or by a pleasant 15 minute walk along the lake. Your reservation will need to be confirmed via the web site http://www-sst.unil.ch/interrad/index.htm along with 20% deposit, due April 15, to secure your room. This can be paid via the web site, or by fax. Details of the procedure will be sent in the third circular.

COST TO ATTENDEES:
All fees will be due in CHF
1 CHF = 0.68 Euro = 0.73 US Dollar (Jan. 2003, be aware of fluctuations)

The cost of accommodation AND THREE DAILY MEALS is depending on your choice of room:

  • Double room with shower on the hallway: CHF 90.- per day.
  • Double room with private shower: CHF 100.- per day
  • Single room with private shower: CHF 120.- per day

Registration fee: 200 CHF
Student (includes undergraduate and graduate students, pre-PhD): 100 CHF

Any suggestions regarding fundraising to help further defray conference expenses are welcome.

Full payment of the registration fee, chosen fieldtrip/s and 20 % of the accommodation cost is required during registration via the web site. Alternatively, a download version of the form will be available on line, should you wish to fax your details.

LETTERS OF INVITATION:
Anyone who requires a letter of invitation, for either securing a visa or funding, please contact us as soon as possible.

REQUESTS FOR TRAVEL SUBSIDIES:
We expect to be able to help funding travel and accommodation costs of a few participants who cannot come to the meeting without our help. Please, contact us by mail, we need a budget and a justification of the amount requested.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE MEETING:
Participants should fly to Geneva or Zurich International Airports. Direct trains to Lausanne leave every 30 minutes from both airports. It takes 40 minutes from Geneva Airport and 3 hours from Zurich Airport to reach Lausanne. The University of Lausanne and the Hotel can be reached within 20-30 minutes from the train station by public transport. The field trip to Zermatt will be by bus/train, University mini buses will be used for the pre- and post-meeting field trips.

The pre- and post-meeting field trips will start and end in Lausanne, or Geneva Airport respectively.

SCIENTIFIC THEME SESSIONS:
Technical sessions for INTERRAD 2003 will be plenary sessions, organized by theme. If you are interested in convening any of the below sessions, or would like to propose an additional session, please contact us. Your job as a convener will be to work with the scientific committee to solicit abstracts and to supervise the session during the meeting.

  1. Radiolarian biology, ecology, genomics.
  2. Radiolarian taxonomy, systematics, and phylogeny.
  3. Radiolarian biochronology, quantitative methods, calibration, correlation.
  4. Radiolaria and Radiolarites as paleoenvironmental indicators.
  5. Radiolarians in terrain analysis, structure and tectonics.
  6. Development of radiolarian databases and computer tools
  7. Radiolarian biostratigraphy of critical stratigraphic intervals.

Please note:  the length of these sessions will be determined by the abstract submissions. Those with little or no interest will be cancelled or combined with other sessions.

TALKS:
No parallel sessions will be held. Sessions will be organized based on the submitted abstracts. A speaker ready room will be set up, and information for the speakers will be mailed to speakers along with abstract acceptance notices.

POSTERS:
Posters will be hung for the duration of the meeting and specific time will be set-aside for authors to be present at their posters for their discussion and presentation. Maximum poster size is set at A0 (1189 mm x 841 mm).

ABSTRACT LIMIT:
As usual, each speaker will be limited to one oral presentation and two posters. You may be co-author on additional abstracts that you are not presenting. Abstracts are to be submitted via the web site, details of this procedure will be sent in the third circular. Abstracts are only accepted in digital format. They may include illustrations. Abstracts will have to fit on two pages. This means, that they will be limited to 1,000 words, or 500 words and one page of illustration, etc. The detailed format will be communicated in the third circular.

EVENING WORKSHOPS:
We have had a good response for the call of evening workshops, proposed themes:

Paleozoic Working Group
Triassic-Jurassic Working Group
Pliensbachian-Aalenian Working Group
Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Working Group (progress and discussion of the revision of the Atlas)
Late Cretaceous- early Paleogene Working Group

FIELD TRIPS:
Based on the response from the first circular we plan to organize two pre-meeting and one post-meeting field trip. Costs are still estimates and depend on the number of participants. Detailed information on the logistics of each field trip will be communicated to the participants after registration. (Deadline 15 April). This is the present situation:

MID-MEETING FIELD TRIP, Wednesday, September 10.
Field trip to ZERMATT - GORNERGRAT by bus/train. This trip will be led by structural geologists who have worked in the area and will allow us observe a complete transect of the Central Alps, with many panoramic stops and a gentle walk on a Mesozoic ocean floor on the Gornergrat at 3000 m above sea level. We will have a breathtaking view of many glaciers and the highest peaks of the Alps. Mountain boots and warm, waterproof clothing is required. Cost: Approximately  CHF 120.-

Currently there are 34 participants for this trip, with free space still available.

PRE-MEETING FIELD TRIP A, SICILY.  Wednesday, September 3 to Sunday September 7.
Mesozoic and Cenozoic radiolarian biostratigraphy and paleogeography of Sicily. Includes flight Geneva-Palermo-Geneva. Estimated cost CHF 1000.- Organizer: Marco Chiari: mchiari@steno.geo.unifi.it. At present there are 16 persons interested in participating.

PRE-MEETING FIELD TRIP B, SPAIN, Wednesday, September 3 to Sunday September 7.
Mesozoic and Cenozoic radiolarian biostratigraphy and paleogeography of Southern Spain. Includes flight Geneva-Granada-Geneva. Estimated cost CHF 1000.- Organizer: Luis O'Dogherty: luis.o'dogherty@uca.es. At present there are 16 persons interested in participating.

POST-MEETING FIELD TRIP, Saturday, September 13 to Thursday, September 18.
Mesozoic radiolarian occurrences in the Southern Alps (Belluno Basin) and Slovenia. Starts and ends in Lausanne.  Estimated cost: CHF 500.- Organizer: Spela Gorican: Spela@zrc-sazu.si. At present there are also 16 persons interested in participating.
