Cenosphaera sp. det. Benson, 2003

Description - Add description

Remarks. Benson (1966, 1983) previously assigned tests with large (>100 µm diameter) single cortical shells and no radial spines to Thecosphaera sp. (three shells connected by radial beams, no radial spines) because he considered the presence or absence of the two inner shells to be subject to intraspecific variation. It is now clear that large single shells without radial spines (Benson, 1966, pl, 2, fig. 11) should be assigned to Cenosphaera Ehrenberg. Tests with three shells and no radial spines (Benson, 1966, pl. 2, figs. 12-13) are now identified as Actinomma sol.
