Thecosphaera sanfilippoae Blueford, 1982

Description - Add description

Description: Usually two concentric shells, occasionally three, with diameters of 90-110, 24, and 12 µm. Outer shell thin, rough to bumpy, lacking spines. Pores circular, nearly equal, 5-7 µm in diameter, closely packed, polygonally framed, 7-11 µm between pore centers. Inner shell thick, connected to outer shell by four thin radial beams. Pores small, circular, of equal size. Innermost shell thick, details obscured.
Holotype: Plate 4, figure 5, DSDP Site 77, core B-21, section 6, 140-142 cm, England finder X38/1 (USNM 315060).
Distinguishing features: Two or three thin concentric shells, lacking spines. Differs from all species described by Nakaseko (1971) by smaller pore size. Differs from Thecosphaera inermis (Haeckel) and T.grecoi (Vinassa de Regny) by smaller second shell and smaller pores on outer shell.
Comments: Haeckel seperated the genera Carposphaera and Thecosphaera on the basis of the number of shells. This character, although applicable in some species, is not valid here. I use the genus name Thecosphaera because it describes the maximum number of shells.
Derivation of name: In honor of Annika Sanfilippo, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California.
Occurrence: Common species, no upper or lower limit distinguishable.
