Description - Add description

C. reticulata.

[C. reticulata. Skeleton a somewhat uneven lattice sphere of irregular polygonal pores with very delicate bars arranged in such a way that a number of groups of 4-8 smaller pores each is distributed according to a certain pattern between larger pore fields.

Fundort: Messina, sehr selten.

[Diagnosis: Lattice sphere, usually somewhat ellipsoidal, composed of irregular polygonal pores arranged in groups of 4-8 minor pores, each group displaying a certain pattern, and being separated by reticulating bands of larger pores.

The lattice sphere of this species is characterized by several peculiarities, for one thing by its mentioned ellipsoidal elongation, which is so small, though, that the ratio between the longer and the shorter axis of the ellipsoid is only 12:11 or at best 8:7. However, it also seems to occur as perfect spheres. A further characteristic is represented by its several lattice bars, irregularly connected and of unequal length, usually starting from several random points on the inner surface of the lattice ellipsoid, and crossing towards adjacent points in the lattice sphere, where several of them connect and join themselves together, such that, through the outer lattice, parts of the inner network are here and there visible, giving the impression of supporting columns connecting neighbouring sphere bars.
These short, isolated inner lattice bars, however, always run immediately below the lattice sphere surface, and neither cross the hollow space of the latter, nor ever penetrate the central capsule. Finally, the appearance of the network is also very peculiar, as one notices a number of conspicuous islets of small pores, each separated by broad bands of larger pores. There may be about 20 of these islet-shaped groups on the sphere, seemingly very irregularly distributed, and each consisting of 4-8 very small pores. The diameter of these small pores is only 1/60-1/30 of that of the sphere. The coarser, reticulated bands between the islets usually consist of 3 (2-4) large pores across. These pores are very irregularly polygonal, mostly penta- to hexagonal, and 2-6 times as large as the small ones. Their diameter is 1/20-1/10 of that of the sphere. The lattice bars are thin, straight, cylindrical, hardly as wide as the smallest pores, about as wide as 1/80 of the sphere diameter.

The central capsule is spherical, opaque, dimly bluish or light blue; the ratio between its diameter and that of the shell = 2:3 or 3:4. It is tightly packed with numerous large oil droplets, mostly 0,012 mm in diameter, with many small blue pigment grains and light vesicles appearing in between them when the animal is crushed. All observed specimens were dead, the space between the capsule and the lattice sphere being filled with a radiate jelly mass in which many dark grains and isolated very small yellow bodies were recognizable.

Measurements in millimetres: longest diameter of the lattice sphere 0,16 mm; shortest diameter of the same 0,14mm; diameter of the small pores 0,003-0,006mm, of the larger ones 0,008-0,016mm; width of the intermediate bars 0,002mm; diameter of the central capsule 0,1-0,12mm.

Locality: Messina, very rare.

C. reticulata HAECKEL 1862 (Pl. XXXII fig. 1 et Pl. XXXIII fig.

XXXI fig. 1).
